What’s going on??

Loneliness seems to be something that stays with me. I go in and out of phases of my life, but it seems to always come back. So does that mean it the feeling of loneliness is eternal, something I am supposed to just live with? Or, is that loneliness is a part of human nature: universal? To try and get to the bottom of it, I thought I’d collect some of the theories of loneliness I’ve run into lately. They seem to be running right into me, so why deny them right?

  1. Sabrina (the movie): “You seem embarrassed by your loneliness. Don’t be. It is only a place to start.” Here Sabrina’s new mentor says she found herself in Paris. But she notices Sabrina seems afraid of being by herself. Loneliness here is: a clean slate, a space for self discovery.
  2. My mom (should have her own movie): I was having what could have been the third or fourth of twelfth breakdown since I came home after graduation. My mom finds me under the covers, crying. After explaining how alone I was feeling, she said to me: loneliness is our selves telling us something. It’s communicating to us a need. And this need, it gets us going. It gets us moving, searching. Loneliness here is: the self telling us we need others, a push outside ourselves, a motivator.
